My response to the results of the American presidential election. Whoever is president in The US also effects the rest of the world, not in the least it's allies, so I can't help but have strong opinions about this. This F*** UP will melt all over the rest of the world.

I am so incredibly disappointed in this outcome, and I fear for what's to come. I'm not shocked at the results, as the Brexit vote opened my eyes and I have seen the emergence of far right-wing groups as well as hate. My firm belief in democracy has been slightly shook this past year.

I feel for Hilary Clinton, and all the people who voted for her. She was a highly qualified candidate, and I truly believe that had she been a man instead of a woman, she would have won over Trump. Not because people have knowingly avoided voting for a woman (although, there are sure to be a few of those too), but because she was dragged through the mud for all of her mistakes - in a way that a man would never have been. She is no worse than any other politician who's been in the game for this long, but she's the one getting the attention for it. The only reason Trump doesn't have political mistakes on his record is BECAUSE HE HAS NEVER BEEN A POLITICIAN. Now, unfortunately, we just have to wait and see what he'll do. The focus on Clinton has been ridicilous all the way through, for example all the talk about her being unlikeable and cold. BECAUSE SHE'S A STRONG WOMAN. No one would ever have said the same about a man in her position. It's disgraceful. Hilary wanted almost all the same things as Bernie Sanders, their politics overlapped a lot. She was America's ticket towards a slightly more socialistic country, and let me tell you: I live in one, and it is amazing for the poor and for the middle class. Trump does not want these things.
I understand the people's need for change, especially in a time with low trust in the government, but this is NOT the way. Trump isn't really a "break" from the elites, he IS one of them - he just knows how to spew hate and say what people want to hear. What exactly is his politics, what is he going to do? There's been SO LITTLE focus on it, I'm not even sure!

And not only has Trump been elected, Mike Pence is no better! Believing gays can be converted to straight does not belong in this age My master's degree in history has taught me a different way to view the world and politics than I had before. And the way things are going now makes me shiver. However, I also learnt that some things are just down to small coincidences that affect each other, so let's hope this takes a turn for the better soon.

Now all we can do is hope that Trump really means the things said in his winner speech, because that really was a step up from what he's said before! I am positive about his eagerness to "make peace" with Russia and other countries with which The US has had a cold relationship with, and I hope this can lead to something good. After all, we are stronger together! And let's hope that man does not touch the NATO in any way.
